Here's the beef

I wanted to share this NY Times article that was forwarded to me (and written by my very favorite cookbook author, Mark Bittman) as I think it's an extremely important issue. We eat mostly vegetarian but I consider myself a "flexatarian" and I try to be extremely conscientious of the where, and what our food comes from. We stick to grass-fed meat when we have it. If you're interested in this topic, which I hope you are because it's beyond being an animal lover, the commercial food industry is totally politically motivated, and environmentally devastating. There is an amazingly informative book called The China Study, that can tell you all about it.

Anyhow, to get the short of it here's the article.

you know what I mean?

The weather report

I swear it rained in LA for a longer period than I can ever remember in all my years of living here (and I'm one of the few natives), I thought I might have to build an arc. That's being totally dramatic, it was actually really nice that we got so much rain and the air was so fresh for a couple days.

Saturday night (POURING rain) my friend Lori was in an art show, she's one of the Angel City Roller Derby girls, the girls were rollin all around the spot. I made a nice entrance to the show by sliding through the door in my wet shoes, yelling because I thought I might land on my back and it would hurt. That really gave Angelo a good laugh. Next we swam over to my friend Rochelle's b-day party, these are the only two pics that sort of made it from the evening, it was so dark in there.

Jamie and Ciara, not really doing the girls justice here.

This lovely family

It's pouring rain in LA today, I pretty much love it when it rains in LA and I especially love getting warm n cozy at home during these times. Today though I was lucky enough to spend the day getting cozy with these three. Now that they have the official father of the bride-to-be's blessing I can officially spill the beans that they will be getting married this year and there really couldn't be a better a couple.

Recipe Exchange Program: Vegan Baked Potato

Let the recipe exchanging begin! Send me your recipes, I'll send you mine - it's better with pics, drawings, needlepoints, or whatnot. This is a book project I've been wanting to do for a while now actually and you are part of it so send your (or your mom's) recipes to hello@busy-being.com

Alex's Vegan Baked Potato

I went vegan last fall while I was doing a good for your body type of cleanse. my dear friend, alejandro, is a chef at the restaurant where I work and was super supportive during this time. he insisted on being my personal chef so that he could learn about vegan cuisine. he's rad. together we researched new healthy and exciting recipes. this one was one of my favorites!

•1 large potato - rub with salt & pepper and white truffle oil
•saute green beans (sliced into quarters), corn, leafy greens (we used spinach & beet greens), and pinenuts in olive oil
•cashew sauce - 1/2 cup of raw cashews. reduce in a white wine (2 cups yield 1 cup per potato) with shallots & garlic (1/2 teaspoon each roughly chopped). blend together and use water to thin. after blended, reheat in a pan with a little salt and pepper to taste.

• when your potato is done baking, top it with the sauteed vegetables and cashew sauce. yum yum delicious! enjoy!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

So what if it's the 13th already. New Year's for me was actually perfect this year - unlike last year when I was asleep on Arianna's couch by 10pm. I'm so not into partying with a bunch of strangers on this night which is already filled with so much pressure to do something monumental. This year some old friends came over, I made arroz con pollo, ate, talked, and danced in the living room. I briefly visited a couple other friends' parties later that night, and ended up crashing with Niki and Yuske while watching "Daises" sometime before the sun came up. Nice.
Laughing while shooting.

2008! BITCHES!!
