HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU!

Update on Justin post

Friends of Justin...

Most of you received a email from Justin yesterday and TO MAKE THIS REALLY EASY FOR EVERYONE to help...

In conjunction with City of Hope, we are hosting a bone marrow drive for Justin at our office next TUESDAY JANUARY 6th, 2009

It will take place between 10am and 2pm...
(So go to work late or come on your lunch break!)

Taking place at the R. Rock Office:
3111 Los Feliz Blvd. Suite 100
LA, CA 90039

O: 323-669-8819

There is NO COST but DONATION of any amount is requested...

They will be doing mouth swabs, no blood! So easy...right? There will be a consent form you need to fill out prior to getting swabbed. The process shouldn’t take long but we’ll have some snacks and drinks if you need to wait. This is open for ANYONE that wants to help out, so SPREAD the word!

Please be aware that by getting tested for Justin, you will be added to the national bone marrow donor registry. When a volunteer registers as a potential donor, his/her tissue type is listed on the donor file and is compared with the tissue type of all patients in need of a transplant. You can withdraw at any time, but keep in mind that you may be someone’s only hope for survival.

Please drop us a line to let us know if you are coming so that we can gauge the number of materials needed. For more information about Justin or the drive, email or call us. See you TUESDAY!

Thanks,
Sonja

A friend in need - serious

Hello,
Some of you LA folks may know Justin Van Hoy aka the Dutch Giant (of the Dutch Press or Swindle Mag)? You have probably seen him around, a very tall, lanky, redhead, with a quiet, unarming demeanor. He's not my close friend but he is someone I often shoot the shit with art events along with his brand new wife Holly, who happens to teach Kindergarten at Angelo's old school; both of them are incredibly endearing, lovely people. Justin is suffering from a relapse of Luekemia and needs a bone marrow transplant asap in order to get through this. So far none of his relatives are a match. I am going in this week to see if I may be a match but the more willing donors the better his odds are. The test is very simple, either a cotton swab on the inside of your cheek or a blood sample, being a match entails about 2 weeks of discomfort on your end and actually saving the real life of one of your peers. Please read his email below and consider what is at stake and if you would be willing to help.
Hi everyone. First off, I hate sending a mass email about anything, but
this is really the best way to do it. I'm sure I forgot to put some
names on here, so pass this around as you see fit...

In case you have not heard, I have had some bad luck and relapsed from
my remission from the cancer ( leukemia ). I had a 30% chance of
relapsing, and unfortunately that 30% has happened. This time around
there is no chance to cure it with regular chemotherapy though, and I
have to have a bone marrow transplant. My brother and sister are not
matches, so we are having to go searching for an unrelated donor. With
this being said, It would mean the world to me if any of you would take
the time to see if you are a match. To get tested is
really simple and only requires a mouth swab or a very quick blood test.

Some of my information you will need:

• Name: Justin B. Van Hoy ( Please tell whomever you are dealing with
that my name is Van Hoy and not Vanhoy. The spelling is important, so
make sure they put a space in between Van and Hoy )
• Date of Birth: 2-27-1981
• Medical Record # 0017538881 ( Kaiser Permanente Hospitals Southern
California
)

I will be doing my transplant at City of Hope ( http://
www.cityofhope.org ), which is just east of Pasadena. It is a really
amazing cancer center and highly regarded, so its really great they are
only about 10 miles from my house. If you are in the greater LA area,
you can go directly to City of Hope to donate blood and get tested at
the same time. There is a $50 fee for processing the marrow sample, but
if you donate blood too, then the cost is waived. If anyone finds it
hard to spend the $50 ( I know times are tough right now, so let me
know and I will reimburse you myself.) If you have any questions and are
planning on going to City of Hope, you can call 626-301-8483. It works
best to make an appointment if you are going up there.

You can also request to have a kit mailed to you. This way you can do
the test yourself and mail it back. Have your results mailed back to
you, and you can send them to me here at my home. Because of medical
confidentiality blah blah blah, they cannot have the results sent
directly to me. But this way I can give the results to my people and
they can sort everything out. My mailing address is:

146 South Avenue 56
Los Angeles, CA 90042

If you aren't in the LA area, here are some links for registering with
the National Bone Marrow Registry, the entire registry is a worldwide
network and is also linked in with the Red Cross, so there are lots of
places to go if you aren't in the LA area. Here are links to
figure out where the closest is for you:

http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Donor_Registry/Join_Now/
join_now.html
http://www.marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Donor_Registry/Join_in_Person/
index.html

I hate asking anyone to have to do this, and I think you all know me
well enough that I wouldn't unless it was really important. Let me know
if you have ANY questions at all and I will get them answered for you.
You can also email my new wife with questions..
holly603@gmail.com Please feel free to send this email along to
anyone, I need as much help as I can get. Post it on your blogs or dump
it in your email blasts, etc.

Hope everyone had a great holiday. Talk with you soon.

Mail Call

I don't know why I didn't do this years ago. People send me / Busy-Being great packages all the time. Here's a few of my favorites that arrived at Christmas. (these pics could not possibly be any crappier, I guess should consider actually buying a real camera and get off the camera phone once and for all)
This one is my very favorites because it comes from a new friend, a nun and artist who is 90 something years old, and was a friend and fellow of Sister Mary Corita. I met her at the anniversary of Sister Mary Corita's 99th birthday and we really hit it off, decided to keep in touch. She sent me a little piece of her art with a pinhole technique she's been developing. So cute.

This is a sweet card (artwork by Sister Corita during a mellower stage of her life, the cards were accidentally printed the wrong way) sent by Sasha who runs the Sister Mary Corita Foundation, wishing us a Happy Holiday and thanking me for helping out during the 99th Anniversary Celebration.

This one came from a guy named Louis in San Diego, complete with cool zines and a little print.

And this was super rad! Came from a girl in Portland, a mini sewing kit that she made by hand in the cutest packaging ever.

This also a great card from NMo Design in the UK. If you've perused this blog you know I'm a fan of recipe exchanging and have been threating to make a cookbook of exchanged recipes, inspired, art directed and formtted through the teachings of "Learning by Heart" by Sister Corita.

Happy Xmas!!! (this takes a while to load)

Here's a Merry Xmas from my BFFL Sonya and Matthew with a cameo by Tabitha since I've been Busy-Being too busy for xmas spiriting this year! I did mean to send a Busy-Being holiday greeting this year like usual but it will have to be a New Year's greeting instead. Nonetheless, I love you all and hope everyone is having a great holiday!!

Woodstock

Yay! The computer is finally back home. I brought over the basket of 3 dozen cookies (see older post) in exchange for my computer but when my computer was handed over it was on and my iPhoto library was open - not good. There was an obvious shift in the vibe as soon as I noticed this and I suddenly couldn't look the dude in the eye and just wanted to get out of there as soon as possible. He very quickly tried to assure me that they hadn't been looking through my pics and it was just open because some other program they run opens all the other apps. in the machine. Intresting that only the pics were left open. Anyways, completely awkward moment at the cookie/computer exchange.

Here is a totally G-rated pic taken tonight. I went to dinner at my friend Mickey's parents house and his folks just got this adorable baby chiuaua (girl) named Woodstock. Aaaawwww.

Does this blow your mind?

It blew mine.

Almost home

So I took my computer in because as mentioned earlier, he was quite ill. Turns out he needed to get his hard-drive rebuilt as well as fresh RAM. Mylan, at Di-no Computers in Pasadena shot up his co-workers in an online under-siege type war game (loud machine guns firing throughout the office), watched a football game on the giant flat screen that was on his desk next to his computer, and helped another customer on the phone, all while fixing my computer asked only for a $62 gift basket of gourmet cookies in exchange for his services. I guess that's a good deal right? So anyways, I won't have time to pick up the computer till the end of the week so just hold yer horses.

Aaww mang.

Today I'm taking my computer to the hospital. It finally started working with my camera again but as soon as I got back from Miami it crashed out. Luckily Angelo has an old mac I can use but all my new (and newish) pics are trapped in the hard drive of a sick computer. I'm hoping it won't need major surgery. credit: I have borrowed 'Aaww mang' (and the whistle on my voicemail) from my friend Matthew.

Sick of the bullshit?

perfect last resort can't find a sublet, sick of the bullshit.

do you fucking hate craigslist now????
have you been staring at it all day? totally bummed by people that are proud of the fact that they DON'T OWN A TV?
fuck that shit.
do you want to live with someone (just for a month) that totally WANTS to be the joker? from dark knight, not from the shitty tim burton one and not from the playing cards.
someone that has NO JOB? that goes for a "walk" in the park every day only to dream up new schemes like "EXTREME CASE SCENARIO", "BIG SUR REAL ESTATE ADVENTURES INVOLVING ESP" and "REVENGE SCENARIOS FOR HIRE".
you can sleep in the 6 square foot "hallway" located between my bedroom/living room and the bathroom in consideration of this i will go outside to get into the bathroom.
for a $10 installation fee i will put a 8 inch flat screen on the bathroom door so that you too can watch "SURVIVOR" and "MARIE ANTOINETTE" with me when i return from my "WALK".
or
we will watch the dark knight on BLURAY DVD on repeat. it is totally soothing.

My friend David posted this ad on craigslist as a joke and has been receiving serious inquiries. Even though he lives in a studio apartment, I think he should take someone up on it, it's just for a month and who didn't love the dark knight?
