Moustache party

Last night we had dinner at Sarah and Jacob's house. I don't have more pictures of Sarah & Jacob because we were too busy taking pictures of ourselves and not helping while they lovingly prepared a delicious dinner for us.

This is how we do turkey

We - as in myself, my mother, and other ladies of my family have a very specific process for preparing our Thanksgiving turkey. This recipe comes from Colombia and even though we are not Colombian (we're Nicaraguan, among other things) we've adopted it as our own and have been making turkey this way for as long as I can remember.

This bird must be prepared 3 days ahead of time.
Cover the table in saran wrap and lay down a bed of grape leaves. A paste of roasted and crushed cumin seeds, lots of chopped garlic, black peppercorns, and sea salt is then used to cover the whole bird. When you pull off the metal leg clamp, make sure to reach in and take out the neck (my mom uses it for the gravy, I don't go there). I call this step "Sex in the kitchen." This can be a bit obscene, please cover the eyes of small children.
Next cover all exposed parts with the grape leaves.
Then wrap it up airtight in saran wrap. You really need to go crazy to get this right. It requires almost an entire roll of wrap.
3 days later it's ready for the transformation. Unwrap it.
Roast it.
And share.

Bloody MOCA

Last night Marsea and I went to the 30th anniversary party at the MOCA. I took an unfortunate spill down the cement steps on the way in, with my heel caught in the hem of my dress I could only grab onto Marsea's ass for support. The show was so good that I was able to thoroughly enjoy it despite the bloody knees and shins.

Kesley Brookes opening tomorrow night @ Quint Contemporary

Kelsey Brookes is one of my favorite art buds of all time. If you can get down to San Diego tomorrow you have to go his opening. Kelsey is crazy talented and his paintings are so impressive up close. The amount of detail he puts into each painting is insane. I've written press releases on his work in the past and words are just not sufficient enough to convey what he does. Go check it out.

Autumn Pear Pie

Thanks for the music suggestions and links!

So does anybody remember back in January 2008 I posted the Recipe Exchange Program? No? Well I'm not surprised because only a couple people jumped on board. Anyhew, Sonya has been baking up a storm up in San Francisco and being a doctor of eastern medicine she's taking recipe exchange to a whole new level.

This is her email (she's not much of a blogger):
Round two of my Autumn baking craziness...

Everything I used for this recipe is organic and local, except for the spices (overseas). Nourishing & warming in character... very appropriate for the season!

• bartlett pears - li zi: nourish yin, moisten dryness, clear heat, regenerate fluids, and calm the heart - sweet & neutral

• goji berries - gou qi zi: nourish blood, yin, and essence - sweet & neutral

• walnuts - hu tao ren: tonify yang - sweet & warm

• fresh ginger - sheng jiang: warming; release the surface - spicy & warm

• cinnamon - gui zhi: warming; release the surface - spicy, sweet & warm

• clove - ding xiang: warm the interior & expel cold - spicy & warm

• nutmeg - rou dou kou: astringe, stabilize & bind - spicy & warm

Angelo received this as a gift from his teacher for his 13th birthday. He described it as being an EPIC gift and that he loves everything about it.

Yesterday was Sesame Street's 40th Bday!

How does this girl have a llama in NYC and it's totally cool for everyone (including the llama) to bring him in for a teeth cleaning in a ground floor brownstone apartment building? Love this show. When I was little I had nightmares that Barkley (the dog) was chasing me up the hill like he chases the kids in the closing credits. Happy Birthday Sesame!

AND Hulu is doing "Sesame Street Celebrates 40 Years - 16 Videos" brought to you by the letter B!

Trick or Treaters

Angelo loves his new chain mail head piece. He's been wearing it to school almost everyday.
Ha! This picture is really funny (to me at least) on so many levels.
