The Kaiser Wilhelm church in West Berlin. The damaged tower is a symbol of Berlin's resolve to rebuild the city after the war and a constant reminder of the destruction of war.

My last night in Berlin we went to Bar 25. Deceiving on the outside, I thought I was entering a little dive bar but soon learned I was in the mecca of Berlin-kid party-till-next-week wonderland.

We came specifically to see Jahcoozi, Sasha is Wibke's bff and she plays the trumpet. There is a special place in my heart for a good brass section.

Kelsey Brooke's went all out with Explosion Puzzles and mechanical Explosion Spinners among other great pieces.

Explosion Puzzles: Kelsey took the regular explosion paintings and turned them into puzzles. Each of these 2 paintings has 5 interchangeable parts which can be swapped out with each other (you can push the individual pieces out from the back of the frame using a pencil) making 25 unique paintings. These ones are 16in in diameter.

I have had a major case of the SADS all week due to a wild ass coyote whisking my precious cat Bubbula out of our lives after 11 happy years together on Monday morning. It's possible that our other cat Gracie, who has not returned home since January may have also met the same fate. We opted to remain in denial and assume that she had moved in with another family but the neighbor's account of having witnessed Monday's act of terrorism (just a little too late to help) has slapped us in the teefs. There is now a kitty memorial alter with photos, flowers, candles, and catnip toys in my living room.

The mouse that Gracie let loose in the house and then forgot about last Winter has survived both cats and is still living in my house, terrorizing myself and my guests with an occasional appearance while nonchalantly avoiding all mouse traps. I've seen him 2x this week. He must sense that the house belongs to him alone now. Is it wrong that I feel a little bit of consolation to know that he is living with us? In some way, the kitties live on through this mouse whom has doubled in size since his arrival last year.

This video of a marmot made me feel a little happier today as well as the flowers that were delivered to me at work.

LOS ANGELES – Opening May 22, New Image Art Gallery presents “Keep Out the Light,” a solo exhibition that features new paintings, sculpture and site-specific installations by Richard Colman. “Keep Out the Light” marks Colman’s first solo exhibition in Los Angeles since 2007.

In this most recent body of work, Colman shows the struggles of the architect working “behind the scenes” of the elaborate; both beautiful and claustrophobic among landscapes and artifacts. Richard’s work demonstrates a unique language drawing on the intricacies of an Indian Miniature, to the antiquity of the more abstract and symbolic nature of Byzantine art. Colman’s patterns have the repetition and geometry associated with Islamic tiles and mosaics. Narratives depict day-glo orgies, fusing the sinister with the comical. A pantheon of internalized imagery and shared iconography comes into play in the shape of occult symbols, silhouettes, and rainbow sprays of color, piles of viscera, in a concoction of violence and ecstasy.

The subjects of his paintings—from headless bears to naked men—are presented in a theatrical way, like actors in a play, standing in formation. The work captures the feeling of being frozen on stage, anticipating what will come next and never quite finding out.

The title of the show, “Keep Out the Light,” references the density of Colman’s work, as well as his obsessive work habits, serving as a sort of escape for the artist. The works in this new exhibition exhibit the strength of obsessive patterning and imagery to drive away the delusions of everyday life.

Colman will be constructing a space within the gallery that will both highlight the work and invite viewers to step into the art and explore and experience the landscape of “Keep Out the Light”.

The opening reception will take place on May 22, 7-10 p.m. at New Image Art, 7908 Santa Monica Boulevard, West Hollywood, CA 90046. The exhibition runs through July 3, 2010.

Music will be provided by the act W-H-I-T-E an electronic pop influenced solo project by Cal Arts student Cory Hanson. Commemorative tee shirts will be for sale and graciously made by 2K, and drinks provided by Primo Beer. For additional information, contact info@newimageartgallery.com

Colman was born in 1976 and grew up in Bethesda, Maryland, a suburb of Washington, D.C. Colman graduated from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, in 2002. He has exhibited extensively throughout the world in solo and group exhibitions including Krets, Malmo Sweeden, V1 Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark, Merry Karnowsky Gallery, Los Angeles, Union Gallery, London, UK and ARKEN Museum Of Modern Art, Denmark. Tragic news about PIXNIT

35 year-old Boston artist PIXNIT, has been missing since April 2nd, and is presumed dead. She was last seen April 2nd when filmed by a CCTV camera near Pont Alexandre in Paris, France. It is believed that she was on her way to meet other Parkour enthusiasts for a practice session.

Police believe PIXNIT was engaged in such activity near the Seine River and maintain she is missing and “presumed dead by misadventure”. Although friends launched an extensive poster campaign and police searched with dogs, divers and from the air, her fate remains unknown.

My heart goes out to her family, such a loss.

It is more of a documentary about the making of Mr. Brainwash and there is incredible footage of everyone's favorite street artists and quite a few laughs. Retna was born in Los Angeles, California in 1979. Since first creating a name for himself in the early 1990s, Retna has become an "eternal broadcaster" of sorts, shining a light to the kinetic urban soul of Los Angeles. The name RETNA itself evokes the timeless power, movement and visual vibrancy behind the artist's acclaimed work. His work merges photography with graffiti style and paint, time with color, couture with street culture, the spiritual with the sensual, and fluidity with grit. Whether his paintings hang in a gallery or wall on the streets of Los Angeles, they serve as a retina through which we view the urban journal of contemporary art.

At an early age, Retna was introduced to L.A.'s mural culture. While still in high school, he led one of the largest and most innovative graffiti art collectives the city has witnessed. He is perhaps best known for appropriating fashion advertisements and amplifying them with his unique layering, intricate line work, text-based style and incandescent color palette reflecting an eclectic artistic tradition. RETNA became just as notorious for his ornate painting technique as his timeless style: he used paintbrushes mixed with the traditional spray can. Many of his pieces synthesize the line between fine art and graffiti, between power and opposition, between tradition and advancement.

Today, Retna traverses between the galleries and streets with ease. Retna is a member of the Art Work Rebels and Mad Society Kings Art Groups. In December 2007, he contributed to a large-scale mural project with El Mac and Reyes called "La Reina del Sur" at Miami's Primary Flight during Art Basel. His most recent projects include an exhibition titled "Vagos Y Reinas" at Robert Berman Gallery and a mural called "Seeing Signs" at the Margulies Warehouse for Primary Flight.

Karaoke kills

GENERAL SANTOS, the Philippines — After a day of barbering, Rodolfo Gregorio went to his neighborhood karaoke bar still smelling of talcum powder. Putting aside his glass of Red Horse Extra Strong beer, he grasped a microphone with a habitué’s self-assuredness and briefly stilled the room with the Platters’ “My Prayer.”

Next, he belted out crowd-pleasers by Tom Jones and Engelbert Humperdinck. But Mr. Gregorio, 63, a witness to countless fistfights and occasional stabbings erupting from disputes over karaoke singing, did not dare choose one beloved classic: Frank Sinatra’s version of “My Way.”

“I used to like ‘My Way,’ but after all the trouble, I stopped singing it,” he said. “You can get killed.”

The authorities do not know exactly how many people have been killed warbling “My Way” in karaoke bars over the years in the Philippines, or how many fatal fights it has fueled. But the news media have recorded at least half a dozen victims in the past decade and includes them in a subcategory of crime dubbed the “My Way Killings.”

The killings have produced urban legends about the song and left Filipinos groping for answers. Are the killings the natural byproduct of the country’s culture of violence, drinking and machismo? Or is there something inherently sinister in the song?

Whatever the reason, many karaoke bars have removed the song from their playbooks. And the country’s many Sinatra lovers, like Mr. Gregorio here in this city in the southernmost Philippines, are practicing self-censorship out of perceived self-preservation.

Karaoke-related killings are not limited to the Philippines. In the past two years alone, a Malaysian man was fatally stabbed for hogging the microphone at a bar and a Thai man killed eight of his neighbors in a rage after they sang John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Karaoke-related assaults have also occurred in the United States, including at a Seattle bar where a woman punched a man for singing Coldplay’s “Yellow” after criticizing his version.

Update on saving the arts in LA

The Los Angeles City Council chose not to vote on the motion to eliminate the Department of Cultural Affairs' 1% TOT allocation.

The Department's only source of dedicated funding is secure, for the moment. The 2009 grants made by the Department are still in question.

The CAO's report and recommendations were put back into the Budget & Finance Committee. The Dept. of Cultural Affairs was instructed to identify an additional $500,000 in budget savings from the 2009 grants pool.

A motion was filed by Councilman Garcetti late yesterday regarding the 2010/11 grants. The motion rescinds the CAO's recommendation to eliminate the 2010/11 grant program. These decisions are not final and are subject to change. Arts for LA will monitor the council file system. The mid-year cuts to the Department are still on the table and the City's financial forcast is dire.

TOMORROW: On Wednesday, February 3rd, L.A. City Council's Budget & Finance Committee will put forward a motion to dissolve Cultural Affairs. Click here to view the agenda packet.

Dear people who care about access to art programs in Los Angeles,
As you may already know, the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs is being threatened with catastrophic budget and staff cuts. Staff reductions of 24-48% have been proposed, as well as the total elimination of the $2.2 million in grants that the Department awards annually. This includes grants that have been awarded for the rest of this year, which may include funding for Venice Arts, Barnsdall Art Center and Junior Art Center among numerous others. In addition, the City of Los Angeles Budget and Finance Committee has put forward a motion that could eliminate any obligation to fund the Department of Cultural Affairs at all.

I don't have to tell you about the valuable programs and organizations that will be adversely affected by this action. The arts in Los Angeles are a 14.8 billion dollar industry. For every dollar spent by the Department of Cultural Affairs, eight dollars are generated directly in jobs for artists and businesses. This doesn't even take into account the value of the arts to society overall.

What you can do:

Write your Councilperson and Mayor demanding that they fund the arts in Los Angeles. Tell them how important the organizations / classes you participate in are to you and your family. Tell them the difference it has made in your life and the lives of your children. Remind them what could happen if they were not here. Do this today.
